THE PROJECT

On April 24, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of a first-in-the-nation “Great Plates Delivered” program, a meal delivery service for California’s older adults.

Great Plates Delivered has two purposes:

  1. Help seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day, and

   2. Provide essential economic stimulus to local businesses struggling to         stay afloat during the COVID-19 crisis.

How it began

When the outbreak began and restaurants began to close, chefs in Sacramento got together to discuss how they could help. The program became known as Family Meal, to provide premade meals for those in need. This soon led to the City of Sacramento partnering with many local restaurants to provide three meals a day to seniors and high-risk individuals during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. These meals will be safely delivered to eligible residents that meet specific nutritional standards set by the California state government.

Am I eligible?

To determine your eligibility, you must:

  • be 65 or older,

  • or 60-64 and at high-risk as defined by the CDC and COVID-19 positive (as documented by a state/local public health official or medical health professional).

  • Live alone or with one other program-eligible adult

  • Not be currently receiving assistance from other state or federal nutrition assistance programs

  • Earn no more than 600% of the federal poverty limit

    • This means you must earn less than $74,940 (single) or $101,460 as a household of two.
